Poverty Is What Drives People Into Banditry-Obi

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has stated that the major reason why bandits and terrorists commit heinous crimes in Nigeria was lack of means of livelihoods.

He disclosed this during an interview with Berekete Family on Monday morning.

According to the ex-Anambra governor, every Nigerian, Christian and Muslim, suffer the consequences of insecurity, and the only way to salvage the situation is by solving the problem of poverty in the country.

He said: “Niger is on the list of poorest states in Nigeria but it has a very fertile land to feed the country. But how will they farm when 7 of its local governments are under seige of bandits? Most of these bandits are unemployed people. I have gone to prisons and asked these bandits why did you do this? They told me “No Jobs”. I asked how much they were paid in the last operation, they said “30,000 and 40,000.”

He also maintained that the concentration of Nigeria’s economy on oil is what is killing the people.
