The House of Representatives is collaborating with the Irish Foreign Mission in the country to secure study scholarships in Technical University of Dublin, (TUD) for Nigerian youths especially in technical and vocational education.
The chairman, Nigeria/ Ireland Parliamentary Friendship Group, Professor Paul Nnamchi, stated this in an interview with journalists, in Abuja, after a meeting with the Irish Ambassador to Nigeria Mr Peter Ryan.
He further disclosed that the President of the University, Professor David Fitzpatrick would soon be visiting Nigeria to firm up the arrangement and also hold talks with the managements of some Nigerian tertiary institutions for educational exchange programs.
Nnamchi said the parliamentary friendship is working assiduously towards technology transfer from Ireland to Nigeria, as well as securing humanitarian support from the latter to distressed communities in different parts of the country.
He said “we discussed about agriculture. We are interested in skills transfer. In Nigeria, emphasis is no longer a chase for certificates only, but a chase for skills. Republic of Ireland has gone far in skill based education especially in information technology, (ICT) which might have influenced the two computer giants, Dell and Microsoft into citing their headquarters there.
“We believe that our youths can also leverage on the Irish advancement in technology. That is why we are engaging the Irish mission for scholarships aids for young persons in technical education. ‘
Professor Nnamchi who stated that the Parliamentary committee was committed to strengthening diplomatic relations between Nigeria and Ireland, said his committee was also exploring other areas of collaboration between the two countries.
